Can the product be repaired, reused, recycled, or traced after sale? Is the environmental claim supported by data or only by marketing language?

Digital product passports are becoming important because they answer these questions in a structured way. A digital product passport is a set of product information connected to a physical item. It can include data about materials, components, production methods, carbon footprint, energy use, repair instructions, recycling options, certificates, and supply chain history. In simple terms, it turns a product from a silent object into a source of verifiable information.

Why Product Data Is Becoming a Sales Factor

For B2B sales, this is a major shift. A product is no longer judged only by performance and price. It is also judged by the quality of the data behind it. A manufacturer that sells components, packaging, machinery, textiles, batteries, electronics, building materials, or industrial equipment may soon need to prove not only what the product does, but also what environmental impact it carries.

The commercial reason is clear. Large companies are under growing pressure to measure emissions across their supply chains. They cannot do that properly if suppliers provide vague sustainability statements. A buyer may need product-level data to prepare climate reports, reduce Scope 3 emissions, meet procurement rules, satisfy investors, or respond to customer demands. If one supplier can provide accurate environmental data and another cannot, the first supplier may look less risky.

From Marketing Claims to Verifiable Evidence

This changes the role of transparency in sales conversations. In the past, environmental information was often placed in a sustainability report or a marketing brochure. It was separate from the product. A digital product passport brings that information closer to the transaction itself. The buyer can ask for data before signing a contract. The procurement team can compare suppliers using more than price. The compliance team can check whether claims are supported. The sales team must be ready to discuss evidence, not slogans.

This does not mean every company must become a technology company overnight. But it does mean that businesses need to understand their product data better. Many firms already know their technical specifications, safety standards, and production costs. Fewer have complete information about material origin, recycled content, embedded carbon, repairability, or end-of-life options. Why Unprepared Suppliers May Lose Contracts

For suppliers, the risk is being unprepared. A company may have a good product, but lose sales because it cannot answer data requests from buyers. If the seller cannot trace these inputs, it becomes harder to prove environmental performance.

There is also a trust issue. Greenwashing has made buyers more skeptical. Words like sustainable, eco-friendly, low-carbon, recyclable, and responsible are no longer persuasive by themselves. This can turn environmental performance into a competitive advantage.

However, the transition will not be simple. Many companies still store product information across disconnected systems. Engineering data may sit in one platform. Supplier records may sit in another. Carbon calculations may be handled in spreadsheets. Certificates may be saved as PDFs in different departments. Sales teams may not know what data exists, while sustainability teams may not know what buyers ask during negotiations. A digital product passport requires internal coordination.

Building the First Product Passport

The first practical step is to identify which product data matters most to buyers. Not every product needs the same passport structure. A battery, a textile product, a construction material, and an electronic device have different environmental questions. Some buyers may focus on carbon footprint. Others may care about material traceability, chemical content, durability, or recycling. A company should start with its most important product categories and its most demanding B2B customers.

The second step is data quality. Bad data can be worse than no data. If the passport contains outdated, inconsistent, or unverifiable information, it can damage trust. Companies need clear ownership of product data. Someone must know where the information comes from, how often it is updated, and who is allowed to change it. This is not only an IT issue. It is a governance issue.

Supplier Data and Internal Coordination

The third step is supplier engagement. No company can build a strong product passport if its own suppliers remain silent. Environmental transparency must move upstream. Suppliers may need new contract clauses, data templates, reporting deadlines, and verification standards. This can be uncomfortable, especially for smaller suppliers, but it is becoming part of modern supply chain management.

For sales teams, the change is cultural. They need to learn how to sell with data. A salesperson may still discuss cost, delivery, warranty, and product features, but they may also need to explain carbon footprint, circular design, repairability, or compliance readiness. This can make the sales process more complex, but it can also create stronger relationships with serious buyers.

Transparency After the Sale

Digital product passports can also support after-sales value. If a buyer can access repair guidance, spare part information, recycling options, or lifecycle data, the product becomes easier to manage over time. This is especially important for equipment, electronics, building systems, and industrial products with long service lives. Transparency does not end when the product is sold. It continues through use, maintenance, resale, recovery, and disposal.

The businesses that benefit most will be those that treat digital product passports as more than a regulatory burden. They will use them to improve product design, reduce waste, strengthen procurement trust, and support better customer decisions. The weakest approach is to wait until buyers demand the data and then collect it in a hurry. By that point, competitors may already be using transparency as a selling point.

A New Standard for B2B Trust

Digital product passports are not just another ESG document. They represent a shift in how products are described, compared, and trusted in B2B markets. Environmental footprint transparency is becoming part of commercial credibility. In the future, a supplier may not win because it says its product is greener. It may win because it can prove exactly what the product is made of, where it came from, how it performs, and what happens to it after use.
